Travelling with Essential Oils

The season of travel is upon us, so here's a sneak peek at my season essentials.

1. The first thing in my bag is Thieves. A blend consisting of Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Lemon, Rosemary and Eucalyptus oils; because of the Cinnamon and Clove, Thieves is considered a “hot” oil & should be diluted with a carrier such as coconut, olive oil, v-6, grapes, etc. Proven to kill 99.96% of airborne bacteria this will be diffused as soon as I get to my destination.

I'll also be applying to my feet before travelling and daily to protect myself from any germy fellow travellers. Along with the essential oil blend, I'm also packing a bottle (or two) of the thieves hand purifier. A bottle of Thieves spray is also accompanying me for similar reasons!
thieves

2. Peppermint is a must-have even when not travelling, so it's coming with me to Spain too. I use it for headaches and to help invigorate me for the day ahead. Peppermint can also help relieve anxiety and alleviate fatigue. In terms of traveling, Peppermint is essential for any queasy travellers. You could add a drop to mug of warm water and consume before travelling. It is also a great idea to dilute this oil in a liquid carrier and put in to a roller so it can be used easily on the go. If you have space then ginger is also great for tummy issues. Digize is a blend containing both longer and peppermint (amongst others) so is good to have on hand too. I will also be adding a drop or two to the bottom of the shower tray to help wake me up, since getting up at silly o'clock is going to be a reality more than once! Traveller's cold is also commonplace in the first few days of travelling, so if possible taking some of my D.I.Y. shower discs would be amazing. Unfortunately I can't so peppermint in the shower is the next best thing.PeppermintBeyond- Shower discs

3. Lavender is, as we know, the swiss army knife of essential oils; used to help a multitude of ailments. Like Peppermint, Lavender normally comes every where with me, so taking it whilst travelling is a no-brainer. Lavender essential oil can be used to alleviate swollen feet and ankles, so it is a must for any long-haul flights. if possible add three to five drops to a damp pieces of cotton, store in a small plastic bag and apply as necessary to feet/ankles in an upwards motion for
Lavendera few minutes. Lavender may also help you get a more restful sleep and assist with seasonal discomforts. Getting sunburn is the unpleasant bit of travelling. You can make a sunscreen with essential oils (which i'll post shortly). However, if you find yourself with sunburn at the end of the day then Lavender oil is the most effective treatment. The most important thing is to reduce the heat in the skin. You could try filling a sink or bath with cold water and immerse the affected part for at least ten minutes. Then apply three to four drops of Lavender essential oil directly to the affected area. Note: Water and oil do not mix, so add some salt (preferably epsom salts) to give the oil something to cling to and disperse.
4. Purification is a blend oil. It includes citronella, lemongrass, rosemary, Melaleuca (tea tree), lavandin, and myrtle oils. This has made my travelling shortlist, because as the name suggests, it is a purifying blend that helps to cleanse and disinfect the air and neutralises mPurificationildew, cigarette smoke, and disagreeable odours. This is a must in hotel rooms which often have poor quality air. I am taking a small travel diffuser with me, but unfortunately have not yet found one that is suitable for citrus oil (since they eat petrochemicals in plastics) so instead will be doing a few drops to some tissue and placing strategically around the room. It may also help to disinfect and cleanse cuts, scrapes, insect bites and stings, so great to have on hand just in case. Bugs are not prevalent at this time of year where i'm going, but because it contains citronella is great for travelling with.
E x t r a s Peace and CalmingIf you are travelling with kids then I would make sure you pack Peace and Calming. It is a gentle fragrant blend oil of: Blue Tansy, Patchouli, Tangerine, Orange and Ylang Ylang. Use during long trips in confined spaces to help with the “ants in the pants” syndrome. I added a roller-fitment to the top of P&C and leave in the car, pass it around the car and hey presto - calm space!
If you or any of travelling companions are nervous about flying or indeed travelling, then a mix of the four below, make a great anti-anxiety combo. Anit-Anxiety\

Hoping To Help

Did you know in 2013-14, almost 150,000 people were admitted to hospital with poisoning in England. Most cases occurred from products found in the home ?

Did you know when you’ve got clean washing, with a noticeable fragrance, you’re breathing in pure chemical ?

Did you also know that typical air fresheners, such as aerosols and plug-in, have been shown to reduce the air quality in the home and can be carcinogenic ?

and did you know that these toxins have been linked to hormonal imbalance and infertility in women, me and children, as hormone disruptors ?

Did you know that there IS a better way ? We do not have to accept this!

I'd love to share with you how we've achieved a healthy household of five with just two sick-days in two years and the simple steps I took to rebalance my hormones and regulate my cycle.

I'm holding an online class next Monday and I'd love for you to join in.

In this class you're going to learn about the easiest ways to reduce the toxins in your home and start creating a thriving environment.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reply to this message or 'friend' me on Facebook and we can chat there.

Spotlight On:Frankincense

With the arrival of advent looming, what better way to start the season than than with a spotlight on Frankincense?!

If it's good enough for the baby Jesus, than it's good enough for me!

'Frankincense is considered the 'holy anointing oil' in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. "Used to treat every conceivable ill known to man," frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it.'
('Frankincense' in Essential Oils Pocket Reference, 6th edn. U.S.: Life Science Publishing, 2014. p. 69)
Frank Graph
Frankincense is now a common oil used during mediation both by individuals and groups to aid in spiritual connections. I diffuse during my quiet prayer/study time.
Here are some of the ways that I use Frankincense every day:
1. Apply 1 drop on wrists and temples to help relieve occasional nervous irritability.

2. Diffuse or rub 1-2 drops diluted, with a carrier oil of your choice, to help
provide a comforting aroma for children at night especially when in a new environment.

3. Rub 1-2 drops diluted to comfort itchy skin.

4. Frankincense can help soothe achy joints.

5. Homemade Face-cream - Frankincense is also a valuable ingredient in Young Living’s skin care products for ageing and dry skin. The Ancient Egyptians used it in rejuvenation face masks. Here is the recipe I use for my face cream which I use each morning and every evening.

(NB. You whip coconut oil when in it's solid form. I use an electric hand whisk.)
Frankincense Face Cream
6. On Scars and Stretch Marks - I use the same lotion as above because I have it on hand, but you can just dilute frankincense in a carrier oil and apply directly to the affected area.
7. Warts - We recently got rid of a wart that Little Man had by applying a drop morning and night directly onto the wart, undiluted. It began shrinking after about five days and was completely gone within ten!
8. Immune Booster - Now we're heading in to winter I alternate between Frankincense and Thieves on everyone's feet at least once a day to build up immunity support and keep germs at bay.
9. To Aid Spiritual Connections - Frankincense is now a common oil used during mediation both by individuals and groups to aid in spiritual connections.  It is fantastic when diffused during a Yoga session.

I diffuse during my quiet prayer/study time.

Why I Use Essential Oils

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS ?

Essential oils are volatile (easily evaporated) liquids and aromatic compounds found within shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds that are usually extracted through steam distillation.
In their pure state essential oils are some of the most concentrated natural extracts known. Have you ever thought of a plant having its own immune system? Each plant contains unique oils protecting it from pathogenic microorganisms (think, fungi, bacteria, etc.) and plant injuries. Essential oil have been around for thousands of years. Mentioned in the Bible some 200 times and in ancient medical tests; today they are fast becoming much more than the aromatherapy of the 1970's. Science is continually the multifaceted aspects of true 100% therapeutic, medical, clinically potent and pure essential oils.
WHY USE ESSENTIAL OILS ?
To enhance your physical and mental wellness:

I truly believe in looking after our whole selves not just parts; in creating a Wellness Toolkit. For me, essential oils are an integral part of my kit.

While some essential oils may uplift the spirits, others may empower you to release negative thoughts and habits.

Essential oils can be your key to a more fulfilling and balanced emotional life. From cleansing and weight management to supporting every system of the body, essential oils and essential oil-infused supplements can provide the balance you need to get your health back on track.

If you want to see how I've used essential oils on my journey with PCOS see here.
To clean and purify your home:

I am slowly eliminating harsh chemicals from my home and in particular in cleaning products and replacing them with natural cleaners. I use essential oils every day in my cleaning routine. Not only do I get therapeutic benefits from using these oils while cleaning, but I am saving so much money too!

If you're interested in learning How To Create A Toxin-Free Home Without Breaking The Bank (Or Using Much Effort) then register for our FREE online event  on 9th November here.
Prevention:

We use essential oils for the prevention of illness.

Whenever my kids are exposed to bugs at school, or in the community, I turn to Thieves oil (and many others) to give them some immune support.

I also use essential oils in my daily beauty regime and to keep my body looking and feeling healthy!

Essential oils are a tool to be used in preventing illness and in turn promoting health. You can check out my 'Living With Oils' pinboard where I pin all of my favourite remedies and recipes.

other thieves

I use all of these products, as do my family. But I have a love affair with the Thieves household cleaner. I love that I only need one cleaner for everything, I don't need to wear those oh so flattering marigold gloves, I'm breathing in essential oils that will benefit my health, not chemicals that won't.
Why use Thieves Essential Oil Household Cleaner to do all your Household Cleaning?
Thieves Cleaner is:
  • A non- toxic cleaner made with natural surfactants and therapeutic oils;
  • An environmentally friendly product that has organic and biodegradable materials;
  • A multipurpose concentrate that should be diluted for various applications;
  • Highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health, since it contains the unique Young Living Thieves blend of essential oils;
As well as cleaning the house, the bathroom, carpets and all else in between, I also use it to clean windows, the car and so much more. It is very effective as a cleaner for the dishwasher and washing machine when mixed with white vinegar. A capful is also particularly effective when added to a heavily soiled load of washing.
The following is a basic guide to the Thieves household cleaner.

Spotlight On: Lemon

Did you know that Young Living's Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from lemon rinds ?

It is not the juice of the lemon and as such isn't acidic so won't affect things like tooth enamel.

Lemon essential oil has a strong, purifying, citrus scent, which is both revitalising and uplifting.

It contains 68% d-limonene, a powerful antioxidant.

Lemon essential oil mayimprove circulation and is also a solid overall immune stimulant.
Fun Fact: Jean Valnet, MD, estimated that it takes 3,000 lemons to produce one kilo of Lemon essential oil. In his book The Practice of Aromatherapy, Valnet wrote that lemon is a tonic for supporting the nervous and sympathetic nervous system.
(Dr Jean Valnet, The Practise of Aromatherapy, Inner Traditions Bear and Company, 1990)
Do you remember how I likened the blend 'Joy' to joy in a bottle? Well in my opinion, Young Living's lemon is sunshine in a bottle; liquid sunshine. It brightens the worst of grey days for me.

Spotlight On: Cedarwood

Young Living’s Cedarwood essential oil is one of my absolute favourites.

It has an earthy aroma that is soft yet slightly spicy.

This can be soothing and grounding and may also encourage feelings of warmth and inner strength.

Cedarwood oil is a powerful essential oil extracted from the bark of the cedarwood tree. The use of this oil is ancient, with it being documented by the Sumerians, Egyptians and Tibetans.

This oil is mentioned over forty times in the Bible and is said to be closely linked with the Cedars of Lebanon. These trees were important to the Jerusalem temples and were thought to represent God on earth.
Cedarwood is beneficial to many of the systems of the body; from the respiratory system to the skin.

Not only does this oil act on the cells of the body, but it is also able to penetrate cells on the skin too, so is a wonderful insecticide and fungicide.

This is also transferable to things like mildew and mould and so is great to have in your arsenal - particularly if you or anyone in your family is affected by these.
The main chemical components of cedarwood oil are Cedarwoodalpha and beta cedrenes, giving cedarwood its distinctive smell, and cedrol.

Cedrol is behind the amazing sedative effects of Cedarwood and is the reason this oil features in our Bedtime Foot-Rub recipe.
Cedarwood oil also contains the highest amount of sesquiterpenes.

What are Sesquiterpenes?

They are a hydrocarbon group found in essential oils and are identical to the haemoglobin in our blood. This means that they have the ability to oxygenate at the cellular level, which may help to release toxins and promote circulation.

This is why Cedarwood is an extremely powerful lymph decongestant, has the ability to reduce cellulite (not just the appearance of it) and is amazing for skin and hair.
W H A T  T O  U S E  I T  F O R
  • Repel bugs
  • Combat mildew and mould
  • Respiratory congestion
  • Minor coughs or lung irritations.
  • For the skin - Skin irritations, wrinkles, acne, blemished skin, oily skin/hair, toning and firming.
  • As deodorant
  • Nervine Tonic
  • Cleaning wounds - this oil may help wounds from becoming septic as well as protecting them from tetanus germs. It can safely be applied externally on wounds as an antiseptic and it is even used as an ingredient in herbal antiseptic creams. By defending the body against toxins, the Cedarwood essential oil relieves the white blood cells and immune system of the extra stress, which allows them to better protect internal functions
  • Relieving inflamed joints -  The inflammation of the joints and tissues that results in such debilitating pain or discomfort may be lessened by the inhalation or topical application of this oil on the skin.
  • Improving overall body health -  since it helps to tone the organ systems and stimulate metabolism. It assists in tightening and toning muscles, the skin, nervous system, stomach, digestive system and brain functions. It may also boost the functionality of the kidney and liver, which further improves overall health and wellness. NB. Cedarwood is also a diuretic so please ensure you drink plenty of water to take full advantage of this oils properties.
  • Help to stimulate and regulate your menstrual cycle. Unwanted side effects of menstruation, such as nausea, pain, fatigue and mood swings may also be relieved with the regular use of Cedarwood. If this is a particular issue for you then our post on Battling PCOS may be helpful to you - even if your issue is not PCOS related.
H O W  T O  U S E
Cedarwood Essential Oil is safe for all ages.  Diluting for those under 6 is always a good practice, along with applying to the foot vitaflex points.
Topically:  Cedarwood is gentle enough to be used NEAT or undiluted directly on the area of concern.  Adding the oil to a carrier oil will allow a larger area to be covered while using less oil, without reducing its effectiveness.
Aromatically:  Diffusing cedarwood gives the home an amazing woodsy smell as well as helping to relieve the symptoms you are attemtping to work on.

* For mould and mildew I mix a few drops in to my ready made Thieves household cleaner for a super powerful attack on these.
* Diffuse to help cleanse the respiratory system if congested.
* Apply to the face daily to cleanse the skin of any impurites. It has antiseptic and stringent properties so will even aid in tightening skin tissue. You can blend with Frankincense for a great DIY Facecream.
* Cedarwood is an antisborrhoeic. Antisborrhoeics work on the endocrine system by helping to normalise sweat gland secretion. I mix 50 drops of Purification and 20 drops of Cedarwood in an empty bottle, add a roller top and use as my deodorant.
* Mrs Bennett should have used Cedarwood all day, everyday to help her 'poor nerves'! It has the ability to relax the entire nervous system. Alongside Frankincense this is a great oil to help induce a state of meditation. This use has been well documented by Native Americans who used it in sweat lodges, as well as many other reasons too!

Thieves

W H Y  T H E  N A M E  T H I E V E S ?
It is rumoured that during the 15th century, a band of robbers stole from the dead and those dying from the plague without contracting the disease. When captured, they were asked to reveal their secret for staying healthy in exchange for a more lenient punishment. The thieves had been slathering themselves with a blend of these oils, hence the creation of Thieves oil. Fascinating!

Thieves is a blend consisting of Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Lemon, Rosemary and Eucalyptus oils; because of the Cinnamon and Clove, Thieves is considered a "hot" oil & should be diluted with a carrier such as coconut, olive oil, v-6, grapes, etc.

Thieves should be your number one go to oil in the fight against germs, while working to support healthy immune function too. This is an exceptional oil to use at any time of year, but particularly at the change of seasons.
Diffusing for thirty minutes each day is recommended during the 'germy' season since when tested at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah, thieves was found to have a 99.96 percent effective rate against airborne bacteria.
Diffusing daily will help to keep the house germ-free, but it doesn't mean you'll never get ill (unfortunately!).

Another great preventative is to make a Thieves roller and apply to the family's feet before putting socks on in the morning. This will help them remain germ-free during the day.thieves petri dish
When someone's immune system is compromised remember consistency is vital to boosting it with essential oils. Up the amount of drops of thieves in the diffuser to around ten and diffuse around the clock.
This week on All in a Drop is thieves week so we'll be discussing the full range of thieves products which are great for becoming a chemical-free home and keeping everywhere and everyone as healthy as possible.

Have you got Thieves in your Wellness Toolkit yet ?

Sharing is Caring

Testimony is a powerful thing. Testimonies speak to us because they are personal, they let us know that we're alone and they promote hope.

Part of the oily family I belong to have Testimony Tuesdays on, you guessed it, Tuesday's !

Here's the one I did. I hope you find it personal. I hope it helps you know you're not alone and I hope it shows you there is always hope.

GLASS CLEANER

Ditch the store bought glass cleaners and create your own!

Natural Glass Cleaner:

Ingredients:

300ml glass syrup bottle and trigger spray top from Baldwins.co.uk
250ml water (filtered or distilled is best but any will do)
1 TBSP white vinegar
5-10 drops of Lemon oil (5 will be fine but 10 hides the vinegar smell better!)

Preparation:

Add all the ingredients to the glass bottle
Add the trigger spray-top
Shake to combine
Use as needed to clean windows, glass surfaces and mirrors
A microfibre cloth works really well and the vinegar smell completely evaporates as it dries

THIEVES CLEANER

Thieves Household Cleaner is simply amazing.  If creating all sorts of different cleaners isn’t your thing, try purchasing the large container of this cleaner that harnesses the power of Thieves essential oil blend.

This cleaner contains Lemon, Clove, Cinnamon, Rosemary and Eucalyptus.  It is incredibly versatile, on top of being all natural, plant based and toxin free.  It comes in a concentrated bottle that you then dilute and use according to desired strength.

Here are some good basic guidelines for diluting and using the cleaner:

    •    General cleaning: 1 capful to 3 cups water
    •    Medium messes: 1 capful to 2 cups water
    •    Really greasy: 1 capful to 1 cup water
    •    Also combine with bicarbonate of  soda for an excellent scrubbing paste.

I use Thieves cleaner for absolutely everything: bathrooms, windows, counters, laundry, dishes, oven, showers, toilets, carpets and more!

One 64oz bottle lasts me just over a year. That covers cleaning EVERYTHING in a mid-sized three bed house with two adults and three children.

WHY BE GREEN (in our homes and environments, not with envy !) ?

There are so many pollutants and toxic chemicals in our world today.  Most of which we have no control over.  However, we can control what is used in our homes!

Did you know that:

    •    Fumes from some cleaning products may induce asthma in otherwise healthy individuals. A large and growing body of evidence links frequent use of many ordinary cleaning supplies at home or on the job with development of asthma and other respiratory problems. It is already known that cleaning product fumes may trigger attacks in persons previously diagnosed with asthma.

    •    Common cleaning ingredients can be laced with the carcinogenic impurity 1,4-dioxane. Independent tests have detected the presence of 1,4-dioxane in numerous name-brand cleaning supplies. Other products contain preservatives that release low levels of cancer-causing formaldehyde.

    •    Children born to women who held cleaning jobs while pregnant have an elevated risk of birth defects, according to a 2010 study by the New York State Department of Health.

    •    Some cleaners can cause chemical burns and poisonings as well as less severe irritations and allergies. Severe physical reactions signal that consumers should take care anytime they use these products.
    •    Despite these health concerns, cleaning product labels often do not give consumers enough information about their ingredients to allow people to make informed decisions on which ones are safer and which ones might harm their health.

    •    Although government scientific and regulatory agencies have focused considerable attention on chemicals suspected of causing cancer, they have devoted far fewer resources to evaluating substances that may be toxic to the brain and nervous system, the hormone system and other organs. Investigating the full range of risks of cleaning products to public health and the environment should be an urgent priority. Yet the problem remains largely hidden from the view of the American consumer.

Chemicals used in pesticides and in synthetic veterinary drugs - including antibiotics and growth hormones - are prohibited under ORGANIC regulations, but not for non-organic meats. These then enter our own bodies and effect us without us really knowing how.

On average women will use or come into contact with 168 potentially dangerous chemicals, daily and men 85 !

You can find more information on the Environmental Working Group website.

SO, WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?

CLEANING TIPS

Our tips and safety guidelines do not include any dangerous or harmful warnings.  However, there are a few things to keep in mind when cleaning with YL products, including essential oils:

    •    Shake products before use.
    •    Test cleaners in small areas first.
    •    Spray nozzles fit perfectly onto old vinegar bottles.  Use these to create cleaning sprays.
    •    Store products in airtight glass or stainless steel containers.
    •    Keep away from eyes.

It’s really important to say here too, that this journey does not need to be overwhelming. Take small steps. My best piece of advice, and one that I followed myself, is to change out one product at a time. Whether that’s your hand wash, your shampoo, your beauty products or your cleaners, it doesn’t matter. Just start somewhere.
