Frequently Asked Questions

If you are new to life with essential oils then feel free to read through these questions I get asked frequently. If this does not answer your question please feel free to contact me using the form to your right.

Questions about Using the Oils

Q: What if I want to use more than one oil at once?

A: You can mix singles, and you can mix a blend with a single, but it is a general “rule” not to mix blends with other blends.  Mixing them together is going to change the frequency of the oil and it may not have the same results as they would if you did them individually.  If you are wanting to mix blends then you my want to try ‘layering’ instead. This is where you put one oil on top of another; since the oils absorb quickly in to the skin no mixing occurs. Some like to wait a few minutes in between or apply it to another part of the body (a vita flex point, perhaps?)

Q: How many drops are in a 5ml and 15ml bottle?
A: Around 100 in a 5ml and 300 in a 15ml, depending on the viscosity of the oil.

Q: I got a new bottle of (Lavender, Thieves, etc) and it smells different. Is that normal?

A: Yes. Young Living grows the plants from which all the oils are distilled, they are also unadulterated. This means that each batch of plants is going to vary slightly because of the changes in season, weather, and so much more. However, since Young Living focuses on the therapeutic constituents, not the smell you can be sure that it still has the same benefits as your previous bottle.  You could try keeping the cap off for a while, which may enable it to sweeten a little. You may also like to diffuse a few drops at a time until you are used to the new scent.

Q: I HATE the way this oil smells, why?

A: When you LOVE or HATE the way an oil smells, that can be an indication that your body needs it. Aim to diffuse or inhale a few drops each day until you can at least tolerate the scent. If it really does not appeal to you, try applying topically to the back of the neck or the bottom of the feet.

Diluting Questions

Q: What does “neat” mean?
A: It means that you are using the oil straight from the bottle, without a carrier oil to dilute it.

Q: What is a carrier oil?
A: A carrier oil is a base oil that is used with essential oils to reduce any burning, slow the absorption rate, and spread the essential oil further.  Examples are coconut, olive, jojoba, sesame, almond oils.  Young Living has a carrier oil called V-6 that is a high-quality vegetable oil.
Q: AHHHHH!!!!!  I just got essential oils in my eye (or other sensitive part that is causing burning)!  What do I do?
A: First, remember that oil and water do not mix, so do not try and flush it out. It won’t, it will just drive it further in, causing more pain! Instead, find a carrier oil, anything will do and slather it all over the area then wipe it out. The burning will begin fade, repeat as many times as you feel necessary.
Q: If I dilute the oil, will it reduce its effectiveness?
A: Using it neat, or using more carrier oil than recommended is not going to reduce the effectiveness of the essential oil, it will just slow the absorption rate or reduce the hotness of the oil – and make your precious oils last longer!
Q: Which oils are generally regarded as “hot” oils?
A: Oregano, lemongrass, thyme, clove, hyssopp, thieves, and peppermint are the ones that are generally regarded as hot.  Everyone’s chemical make-up is different, so what may be hot to me, may not be hot to you, and what may be hot to you one time, may not bother you the next time.  It’s always a good idea to keep a carrier oil with you just in case you experience a hot oil unexpectedly.

Diffuser Questions

Q: Can I put my oils in my candle warmer?
A: The short answer is yes. The long answer is yea you can, but why would you? Heating an oil will affect the properties of you oils. It can destroy between 70-90% of the benefit. If you love your burner then just use up your lower quality oils here, or better yet ditch it altogether and fall in love with your diffuser.
Q:  My diffuser isn’t steaming, what should I do?
A: If you are using distilled or filtered water, try using tap water.  If that doesn’t work clean the metal plate on the bottom of your diffuser with alcohol and let it air dry.  If it still isn’t working contact Young Living’s Live Help with your member and pin numbers.

Q: How do I clean my diffuser?

A: The easiest way to clean your diffuser is by applying a small amount of rubbing alcohol onto a cotton bud and running it over the metal plate situated at the bottom of your diffuser and around the edges. Allow to dry fully before using.

A: The easiest way to deal with this is by emailing customer care and they will (usually) arrange for the prompt delivery of a new bottle.
